Let’s Talk About Death –
I have found over the years since losing my husband that many people I talk with don’t discuss death, won’t even approach the subject or mention it. I really find it difficult to understand, as we all know for a fact that we die at some time, we are not invincible, this is the cycle of life, so why wouldn’t we want to discuss it?
With some people I spoke with, during the conversation they would mention that when their loved one was dying, they did not discuss funeral arrangements or what they wanted, so the family were left to guess what they would have liked.
I find it hard to believe that talking about death is such a taboo subject. Why can’t we talk about death and how we want to celebrate our lives.
We don’t really know how to talk about death in general. We don’t want to discuss any funeral celebrations or how we want to be remembered and usually will leave it up to our loved ones to organise. Some find the death topic too emotional or distressing or even macabre
The Let’s Talk About Death Series discusses the importance of talking about death.
With guest speakers we will be covering topics in the series such as:
-
-
- Talking about death and being prepared – getting things in order
- Being diagnosed with terminal illness – what to expect, services to tap into
- Dying at home – caring for someone, services to tap into
- Language around death & dying
- Making that decision – quality of life
- On deaths door – what to expect, who to contact
- Celebrating – the importance of celebrating, planning the funeral
- Closing the Estate – what to expect, what to finalise when closing the estate of a loved one
-
From the series of talks, I am hoping that this will open up the discussion within families and loved ones. Those plans are put in place to take the burden from loved ones when the time arrives.
